Course Description:
Our most advanced course has an ambitious, multi-faceted focus: to prepare students for the SAT reading test, equip them with a college writing sample, and prepare them for college application personal essays. We will begin with a 3-week study of personal narrative writing which students will be encouraged to submit to the Scholastic Writing Competition. For the last 9 weeks, we will prepare for the SAT and academic writing. Importantly, the SAT has eliminated the essay portion, so most colleges will now require an academic writing sample. To prepare, students will write 2 short, 1 medium, and 1 long essays throughout the course, with the final essay serving as a potential writing sample. To prepare for the SAT reading section, students will complete practice tests for homework (answers discussed in class) and read a diverse selection of texts that aligns with the 4 SAT reading categories: literature, social studies/history, natural sciences, and founding documents.
