2023 HS204-2 Fall Sunday Class

 Class Outline and Expectations

In this course students will be introduced to literature from a variety of genres: social commentary, literary realism, allegory/psychological fiction, and dystopian. Additionally, students will develop short story writing for the Scholastic Competition, critical analysis, and literary analysis skills. The first half of the course will focus on creative writing instruction while the latter half will focus on academic writing (critical and literary analysis). Each week I will provide materials (generally in a PPT) posted to the Slides and Resources folder to guide students in completing their homework.  Students will be writing 1 full piece (short story or essay) every two weeks, but will have other supporting assignments (plans) along the way. Writing assignments are due 48 hours before class. While individual grades won’t be lowered as a result of late submissions, their final grade may be lowered if late work becomes a pattern. Each student will receive a letter grade (A/B/C/D) on each assignment as well as a final grade. Individual assignments and final grades will be determined according to the guidelines below. Students will read their first novel (Tess of the D'Urbervilles) in preparation for the first class!

 

●       Writing: Writing will be graded based on a curve: each week the majority of students will earn in the B/B+ range while the best writing will earn within the A range and the weaker writing will earn within the B/B- range. Students will only receive C/D grades if homework is incomplete, incomprehensible, or does not follow directions at all.

●       Final Grades: Final grades will be based 70% on cumulative writing assignments, 15% class participation, and 15% effort. To clarify the last 2 categories, students will lose points in the effort and participation sections for late submissions, failing to follow directions on assignments, missing homework, etc.
