Course Objectives: 

This course will focus on introducing students to novels from a variety of genres. Specifically, this course will cover a fantasy novel, a comedic adventure novel, a historical fiction novel, a mystery novel, and a narrative novel. This varied reading list will not only challenge and engage students but also present an opportunity to introduce students to reading for the main idea and purpose in various genres. All readings are united by a similar theme: freedom and creativity. This thematic focus will structure students throughout the semester, allow the instructor to facilitate discussion surrounding text-to-text comparisons, and help students connect their personal lives to the stories/themes they discover. In their writing, students learn about Claim, Evidence, and Commentary paragraph structure (CEC) and apply it to their writing. They will also develop basic grammar skills, which they will practice in class via homework worksheets and quizzes. Finally, students will begin developing the fundamentals of creative writing and creative expression through creative journaling and in-class exercises.
