Course Objectives
Course Objectives
This course builds upon the fundamentals taught in HS207-1 creative writing units in the High School and Middle School series. Instead of focusing on theme & symbolism like in HS207-1, HS207-2 will tackle advanced techniques in the following modes — short story, flash fiction, poetry, screenplay, and novel — with a particular attention to developing interesting and complex narratives. We encourage students to think creatively and bring their own ideas to the table!
This is a short intensive course, meaning students will be required to invest significant time each week into completing assignments. Students must also be prepared to share their work in class and revise with peers.
Previous students have gone on to win YoungArts, Scholastic Gold & Silver Medals, Scholastic American Voices Awards, the New York Times Personal Narrative Contest & Summer Reading Contests, Patricia Grodd Poetry Contest, John Locke Essay Contest, and more.
Office hours will be available by appointment and are highly recommended for students who would like to clarify homework questions or discuss writing opportunities.
Note: A writing supplement is required to apply for this course. HS207-1 is a general prerequisite for the course.
